Fabric and Button Barrette tutorial

~These barrettes are fun and easy to make. They are great for using little bits of fabric especially your stashed vintage treasures. They also show case special buttons and are a great use for those buttons that have no matches. I sometimes make matching pairs but I really like making coordinates that are each a little different but still look good worn together.
*********Level of Difficulty: super duper easy***********


Supplies you will need:
* Ironed Fabric scraps (at least 1” x3”~ ish)

*Cute flat (sew through) buttons
*Non- painted Barrettes (I use binding or hem clips They are cheaper and bare metal) The glue has a hard time grabbing the painted barrette; if you only have painted ones use a metal file to scuff up the paint and it helps the glue grab

*No fray spray (This is not totally necessary but I found it to increase the life of my barrettes) *Hot glue gun (yay) and sticks
* Pliers or tweezers (just to help keep glue off you)
*Scissors( small detail ones work best)

Instructions

1. Pick out and Iron fabrics, I usually work on several pair at once picking out fabrics and buttons before I start gluing. Then I work in like an assembly line fashion. Gluing all the fabric on then cutting all at once etc…




2.Cut scrap fabric in rectangles just larger than the barrettes



3.Open barrette and slide pliers into back of barrette
To hold while gluing





4.Glue generously on barrette top



5.Position fabric as you want on top of glue


Press evenly as the glue cools with medium firmness



6.Allow to cool completely

7.Trim around barrette taking care to leave a slight edge (>1/16”) to allow for any needed fabric expansion when you close the barrette

8. Spray entire fabric side of barrette with no fray spray. Allow them dry completely



9. Use hot glue on the back of the button and position in place on barrettes while open press slowly and evenly. Then leave to cool on open barrettes



10. Sport your cute new hair accessories

No market for two weeks!

Burger and I are off on a trip to see Nanny!!!! Hence there will be no Market August 16Th and August 23rd. We were gonna tryto make the market this weekend but just decided it would be less stressful to take two weeks off. I will still sell things on etsy and I do have my sweet Owl apron on there right now.
I also have some hot mama pajamas on my etsy right now that are super fantabulous. I will not however be mailing any orders while I am away. If you purchase something during the week give me an extra week to send it out! I will probably not be able to check my e-mail so Dada will be manning the machine for me.

We have had a really great summer! I know, I know, it is far from over here in central Texas but I want to look back at this post in late October when the end of the heat is drawing near and say "see you don't really hate summer"

A few things I want to mention

I have a sort of smorgasbord post in mind or actually I have like 3 posts in mind but I only really have time for one. I lost a day( almost 2) already this week to a headache so I will make-up a little time here. Part of the reason I am short of time this week is burger and I are headin' to the Alabama woods(The Talladega National forest to be exact) for a week long trip back in time(to the land where there is no Internet). There is however a huge TV and all the Atlanta Braves baseball you could want

I found out the name of this little park that we love is Butler District Park. This was brought to my attention by a blog post on Rookie moms. The Post was titled "activity#634:spend a week in Austin"
and I have to admit I really didn't read the whole thing but It may be interesting. I however am not responsible if you read it and get bored. This was only our second trip but we have hit it at about 10:30am both times and found parking in the lot both times.( yay)
**The next little post is date night skirt! I started to make the owl apron with this material but decided I wanted to make my "Angry Chicken;5 min skirt from it instead"
I had printed the awesome little tutorial a while ago and just hung it on my "I wish I had time to make myself something" board. Anyway it was a great chance to use the FOE(fold over elastic) on a woven instead of on a knit ( which I have been doing rather successfully after Angry Chickens informative and hilarious video tutorial)

~Well anyway I sort of love it ! It definitely took me longer than five minutes, but ask me again after my next one. I think this is a great pattern for fall(or winter in Austin) because it is flowy and flattering in a longer length. ( longer than I made mine)

**The final post within this post is photos of my absolutely beautiful surprise I received in the mail, from my sweet new friend ApronStrings. She was the winner of My apron Giveaway in July. Monday I received this beautiful gift apron from her. I love it so!
It is funny I make alot of aprons, but the only one I have made for myself is the one I wear at the Market. I don't wear it at home because I don't want to have to wash it every week( my laundry facilities are limited). I have other aprons but this one is super special.And isn't that part of the fun of aprons; they make everyday stuff special. She also sent me the sweetest letter that brought a tear to my little eye (thanks D).
What is that? how can you get your own beautiful apron like this? well you can hop over to Apron strings and bug her about setting up an etsy shop ( you can do it D and you SHOULD do it )

so that wasn't so bad ... there was a common thread in there somewhere..maybe
